Engine oil is like blood circulating through your engine. Take care of the oil and the oil will take care of your engine. There are four key points that you need to follow to preserve your engine and maximize the life of your investment.
- Check oil when the engine is cold. If the engine is not cold, wait thirty minutes to an hour after turning off the engine before checking the oil. There can be two gallons of oil still circulating in the head of the engine when the engine is turned off. This oil needs to drain to the pan for an accurate reading of oil level. Don’t make the mistake of checking oil too soon and overfilling the engine with expensive oil. This is bad for your pocketbook and bad for the engine.
- Check oil with the truck parked on a level surface in a safe area. Sloped surfaces will cause inaccurate oil level checks.
- This is very important. Only add oil when the level is down to the add line. Don’t top off just because the level is below the full line. Relax and wait until the oil level is at the add line.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: ONLY use engine oil that is approved by Cummins for natural gas engines. Do not use standard diesel engine oil. The list of Cummins-approved engine oils is copied below.

The following form is a great tool for tracking daily oil readings and reinforcing when to add oil. Your daily truck inspection needs to include checking oil and documenting the level to track consumption.
